I Have A Plan

I have never really followed a plan to the letter before but to complete an iron distance race in a reasonable time I thought that now is a good time to start. I'm in my 3rd week and having a structure to follow is surprisingly easier than i anticipated, sure Ive juggled the days around a bit but essentially all the work outs have been done. The hard bit has been sticking to the program, instead i have followed it but then added a few extras as not to reduce the workload to less than what i was doing before. Even though its the off season, and I have reduced my hours training, but can not see any point to losing fitness over winter to a degree that would seem counter  productive in the coming weeks of my base endurance training.

My marathon training plan was hit and miss - in fact i never actually did a run over 19 miles. I did a 16 miler and the 19 miler a fortnight beforehand and that was it really apart from the weekly long runs of 13 miles. This time is going be different, this time I will follow my plan and then there should be no excuses for a dismal result.
seth cifferi machines and donuts - what more could a tattooist want?

A slight hindrance to my aspiring goal is food, its always been a downfall and at this time if year a hard temptation to resist all the niceties but the triathletes world forumites have come to the rescue with a Fat Chuffers thread for 2012 weight loss. Being a slightly competitive type  I have stuck my name down with the intention of getting to around 11stone 2 or 3 by the time the local sprint triathlons take place.

so happy chrimbo and a healthy new year to all

Brickin' it

Today, on my adaptation of the Fink training plan, gave me the much hated brick session. I havent ridden then ran since the Vitruvian tri in september but fortune must have been on my side today as I did a small ride of 9 miles into a 3.5 mile run which seemed to go really well, I base this on all splits were done under the 8minute miling with the 3rd mile done in 7.41 - not super fast but more importantly they were all done without going out of zone 2 ( 85%max hr ), all that marathon training i didnt do must of helped.   :)

All that was followed with a 100 length swim, 2500m, and later tonight i did a weights session and a wind down 9 mile turbo sweat fest, bring on the Xmas pudding. Talking of Xmas i thought i would give the bike a seasonal touch.

Day One Done

Well that was easy, the first day of training for the Iron distance race in July went well, I'm 100% certain that not all training days are going to be this cushy. Todays menu consisted of a run of 30 minutes in Zone2, but after all the work i have been doing lately i couldnt leave it at that so i added a 2k swim this morning, and a 6mile turbo warm up and a weights session this evening. Still undecided if i should hit the turbo again - i did have chips for tea - albeit oven ones.

Tomorrows training plan calls for a small brick session - 30minute ride into a 15 minute run, i dont think this will tax me too much either, i am just looking at it as an extension of the off season, although i really am looking forward to the longer sessions in the spring. I have felt that i havent trained half as much as i should have done lately but i know that i may well regret over training if i do too much more.

A Marathon Swim

This month has seen a slight increase in swim mileage to just over the 27 mile mark which i am very pleased with, and along with my first marathon and some healthy but friendly training log competition on the forum Im not too concerned about finishing the Outlaw Triathlon - or not finishing! Now I'm chasing a decent time.  :)

I think now the focus for the short term is to get my cycling base work in, get bilateral breathing sorted and get my swim speed and efficiency up. Maybe I'm doomed to be a slow swimmer but as i increase swim speed, efficiency drops, my recent times have been 4k continuous in 1 hour 41 minutes (160 lengths of 25m pool)  and a little more recently 2.5k in 1:00:54 so should be looking at 1 hour 30 minutes for the swim leg. The bike and run are very unknown quantities at the minute. I'm hoping for a 6.30 bike and 6 hour run for a 14 hour finish - if everything goes right I may see 13 hours, and that will mean the time I have put in was wisely spent.

so this month
ran a miserable 67.97 miles, biked a sweaty 257.18 miles ( mostly on the turbo )  and splashed around for 27.32 miles

Give me Strength

This week has seen the beginning of a more dedicated strength training program instead of the usual " do it when i can " plan. Its a 12 week plan to get some lean muscle on my bones. Monday started great, Tuesday reminded me of what DOMS was, Wednesday reinforced the pain of working out one set of muscles whilst still recovering    from the last session. All good stuff - no pain and all that. Friday is weigh in day and  I know i have lost weight - the question is - just how much?

Its been relatively easy going of late and last years niggles seems to have sorted themselves out, a 5 mile run turned into a 9.25 - the weather is just too good for November and i did slightly over dress but loved the time out all the same.

mission accomplished

Sunday gave me an unexpected surprise, not only did actually finish the rutland marathon, I did it in a half reasonable time for a first timer with minimal long distance training. The hills were there, just not where i expected them. Having done the Vitruvian Triathlon there a few weeks prior i was expecting 3 large hills at the 20 mile mark but as this course is closer to the lake they werent that bad at all. I found the constant up and down was more difficult than the 3 hills i expected though, not really hard - its the cattle grids that slow you down more.

I had been advised that it wasnt the easiest of first time marathons but whats life like without a bit of uncertainty anyway. I did have a stitch about 3/4 of the way round but after walking for a few seconds it subsided, nothing like the pain i encountered crossing the line at the Worksop half mara the week before. I also ran out of liquid 5 or 6 miles short of the end and had to rely on the aid stations which was a lesson learned - i did only take about 800ml with me.  - Idiot - .

There was people that have done over 800 marathons - im not sure if they are insane or just dedicated, but i do know that while i was running it I was sincere in thinking that it would be my one and only standalone marathon but now i just dont know - Ultra running seems kind of fun, but not at the expense of triathlon training. Im going to need to find out alot more about ultra training plans and then decide. If marathons take a few weeks of prep do ultras take months?  To be honest my legs ache a little today but by next sunday i could see myself running another 26.2 without too much bother.   Anyway my time was 3.58.25 - just made the sub 4 hour :)

more data too analyse :)

Mr Wiggle bought me a Garmin edge 500 for my bday so i christened it with an 18 mile turbo session tonight, very nice bit of kit with every bit of data you could ever need for biking so that should keep me very happy for the foreseeable.

Now just 2 days off the Rutland mara and i haven't got to my target weight but I'll tough it out and haul my fat ass over that line somehow :)

today is my 40th birthday.  i havent trained. i have eaten too much. i may eat more :)

12.84 miles - my bad

I hate to admit it but the 12.84 miles is my months total of outdoor biking i have done. Shameful i know, but i bet i can beat it in November. But while some things are bad - some are good, a PB half mara today of 1.46.24 and an increase in my monthly swimming mileage are all good for building on.

Although the outdoor cycling has taken a back seat this last few weeks I still have plenty of time to get some long rides in and the turbo has been keeping the house warm.

lazy week

Its been a lazy week with less than 9 hours training, and thats including the half mara i have to do this coming sunday, but makes a welcome change from the 12 to 14 I have been doing. Looking forward to the marathon and the rest that will come after it but not the weight that will be accumulated in the off period. Weight is a sore point a the minute with only a pound loss in a week but maybe that because of reduced exercise too - or just that fact that i ate too much

Long SLOW run

I was determined to get one half decent run in before my attempt at a marathon and Sunday I actually did a 20 miler - 19.4 to be precise but close enough. Funnily enough it didnt feel as bad as a 15 miler the week before so I'm in a pretty positive mood about finishing - maybe not in a super fast time but i know for certain it wille be a PB !

So today i had a recovery day - a nice easy spin for 45 minutes and then on the way to work a 1600m swim.

my fitness fiend

no... i didnt get the title wrong - i do mean fiend. The first day done logging my meals and munchies on My fitness Pal has left me hungry a few times but better in the knowledge that im never going to see 12 stone - it was close. A nice little 5 mile tempo run and a 2k swim throughout the day have kept me busy and 30 minutes of 100rpm+ spinning tonight has earn me the right to eat ....... a yogurt, wow :)  well i know i could have more but if i can lose 4lb in a fortnight i know it will make race day a lot easier.

For some reason i always feel better when i have a new goal that requires data input and statistics.

stop eating biscuits!

I must stop eating crap. Over the last year i have worked so hard to get rid of around 6 stone and starting triathlon has made me take up biking and swimming which is good but - i ALWAYS feel hungry unless i have stuffed my face within the last 2 hours!

Well its only 2 weeks until rutland mara now and i have actually put on weight - this is calling for serious action. A food log is how i managed to cut a lot of weight off so im going to resort to the tedium of that again. My Fitness Pal - my fecking nemesis, more like. I know i should be eating to fuel to train, not training so that i can eat but after a year of mostly restraint something had to give. I know my first mara is going to be hard and being in less than optimal shape and size isnt going to make in any easier.

People that have know me for longer than a year look in amazement (or maybe not) with the transformation i have made but the truth of it is that for all the training i do i should be doing better times than i am. Sure, last year even doing a mile run would have been ludicrous, and if some one said i would be doing an ironman in july i would have replied "whats an ironman" but it still isnt quite enough. I finished the half ironman in a little over 5 and half hours which i was pleased with in whole but a sucky swim split and less than swift transition times sit as sore points in the back of my mind. i know that the full iron distance is going to be an altogether different challenge - theres no winging it - i have got to train, got to sort out my diet and get the mental focus needed for a decent finishing time.

Done the distance - well the swim at least

Today I took the plunge in more ways than one. I decided to do the full Ironman distance swim, albeit in a pool which is normally slower for me anyway. 4050m of wetness in 1hour 41 now reassures me that i wont be dragged out lake come July 1st 2012. Even if i dont improve that much from now till then it should still give me a 3800m time of 1 hour 35.

Now just to get some serious bike mileage clocked up.

Tuesday, 11 October 2011

after moaning about my leg before and even moreso after the great eastern run, the run may have been a blessing in diguise. My knee hurt so much i decided that i would skip my monday morning run and go to the pool instead, 3650m laters and a day after i cant even feel any pain, even less than before the run. So even though i havent got any long runs in up to now it looks like ill be able to get at least 2 in before rutland - happy days :)

4 Weeks left!

4 weeks to go until the rutland mara and finishing in a half decent time seems fairly unlikely, with the injuries i have had over the past month getting in long runs has been near impossible. But ... i paid for it so im gonna do it.

Today saw a sorry attempt at a half mara, even though it was probably a PB it wasnt alot faster than what i can do in a half iron distance race. The way i look at it is that i needed something to jolt me in to running over 6 miles again. This certainly gave me the jolt, after laying down for a while at home I tried to stand and failed miserably. My knee locked out and took a few minutes of gentle easing to actually get it to even move. i think im going to leave the distance training as i know i am aerobically sound for the 26 mile run and theres no need to temp fate and make my knee worse. Im sure people have done a mara on 7 mile runs before - if not theres always a first - after all its the way of the pirates :)   JFDI

New toy

A new toy arrived in the house recently. I thought i bought a bike turbo (elite crono elastogel )for winter training, what i actually bought was an instrument for self torture. I know people have said it makes you sweat a bit but i had no idea until now. After 15 minutes i had to stop on my first session to find my fan which once got used on the tread mill at its lowest setting, after 30 minutes biking on this device with the fan on full blast im still losing more fluid than niagra falls!

Readings from my garmin though made me feel a bit better - a few hundred calories burned at a time I would nt normally be able to train. As with any new toy you just want to play but today was so nice i couldnt use the turbo - so just before the sun went down i got in a quick 11 miler, on the road, just like it should be :)

Managed a slow 5 mile run this morn then to the pool for some cooling off after the sunny start we had. My knee still hurts but only when i stop, then it takes a few minutes to warm up again and i pay for it later. I really need to get some long runs in with only about 4 weeks of training till the Rutland mara.

return to running

After nearly 2 weeks off from running, bar the Last Minute Tri, i acheived a total of 4.2 miles tonight, not brillaint but it did show up the weakness in my knee is still there so another week or so of gentle runs.
I have ordered a turbo for the bike so this should keep me occupied for the next few weeks - still got to do some aerobic training as the rutland mara is looming ever closer and even if i cant do the long runs i should at least get some base training in for the Outlaw.

On the plus side i have got 8 swimming session done in the last 11 days and today was my first day with a pull buoy - didnt really find it too much different so maybe my body doesnt drag as much as i thought. I will have a look on youtube for some swim sets to do and report back if the pullbuoy makes any difference after a few weeks.

Sooo lazy

well actually i havent been lazy, I have been slightly injured, bad knee has put me out of training for a few days so loads of rest in time for Sundays Last Minute Tri at Southwell. it'll probably be slow but i booked it just for a wind down and a laugh more than anything

getting back to it

Its been 5 days since the Vit and time for me to get back into daily training so i started off today with a bike session from Old Leake - Skegness - Spilsby - Sibsey - Old Leake just under 43 miles in 2 hr 25 min - kept heart rate below 150 for most part, averaging out at 138 so quite a balanced session. Serious considerations are now underway as to which plan to attack the 2012 Outlaw as i dont think the Rutland mara is going to be a to bigger challenge as i once thought.

I still ache!

Having never done an event as long as the Vitruvian I'm finding the recovery process rather annoying. After a 10k hard race i would ache a little the next day and then be fine to pick up the training where i left off, this half iron distance malarkey is another matter. I still ache like anything, After getting up from being seated for a while my legs always seem to remind me what I did to them in the previous few days. Maybe I'm expecting too much from my recovery strategy, but i really do want to get back into training for my next little goal - the Rutland Marathon on the 6th Nov - just after my fortieth bday.

In my head all the training on I did for the Vit should serve as a base for the mara so I'm rejoining a 16 week plan i started before i got a place in the vit. the plan is now 8 weeks through and as luck would have it this week is a recovery block. I should be able to fit in the 3 lots of 8 mile runs this week and continue with the program that has me running a 16 miler next week and the 20 the week after that, i suppose we'll see :)

Today saw a very sedate swim of mixed drills and 4 x 200m and tomorrow an open water session at the lakes should revitalize the legs a little more. I don't know if its the cold water or the compression of the wetsuit that helps but any comfort will be gladly received.

V day

Vitruvian Day arrived and is almost over and the ache from my legs has made me get up and write this as there is no chance of sleep.

All fears were unfounded about cut offs and rubbish times, it looks like all the training paid off for my first Half Iron Distance. The crowds were great, I really dont know if it wasnt for all the cheering that i would have got the times that i did. The Pirates were absolutely astounding - i would say that 1 pirate per race = 1 weeks hard training, the motivation they give you when theres 6 or so to finish a race is truly worth their weight in pieces of eight.

My swim time was 43.55 which was a good bit under my 47.5 predicted best effort - a month ago i was estimating it at about 55 minutes, and 2 months ago i was racing the cutoff. Water temp of 17°C was not too bad at my 6.50 start time but my sighting leaves a lot to be desired still. The water was a bit rough as you headed out with the swell slapping my face until i got into a rhythm.

My bike split was unreal, for me at least, 2 hours 46 minutes. That rutland ripple never gets any easier for me and certainly not on the second loop. I really despise the "no Drafting " rule, better cyclists come past and slow down just in front of you - making you have to slow down to create a 7 metre gap or risk a penalty. I think they should have to over take and should have to pass far enough ahead to create the gap.

My run wasnt so much disappointing but a learning experience, the first lap done in 53.59 was ok considering the previous torture I had put them through but with the second 10.5k left me with a total time of 1.58.47 which equates to about a 65 minute split for the second lap which incorporated a visit to a porta loo, too much information ?  I learned I really didnt need to drink so much fluid earlier on in the run and that bananas and biscuits make bad choices for my nutrition plan.

My transitions were slow but i stand by wearing socks for this length event. On the run a guy in front of me was in a mess with blood coming from the backs of his feet, Im not, or never will be in with a chance of doing a truly good age group time so Im more than happy to enjoy the events for what they are and not worry about whether it takes 2 minutes or 4 in T1.

So my totals are :
1900m swim 43.55
T1                     4.03
bike 85k     2.46.00
T2                     2.21
Run  21k     1.58.47
Total           5.35.06     and loved every minute of it

I didnt call for a taxi

Tonight spin was an eye opener - literally.  Nearly home from a quick 7.5mile, 100+ rpm spin, when a taxi decided to let me know that he was behind me on a single track raod by virtue of his car horn, he was about 6 foot behind me and i was only about 20 or 30 foot from the layby, i think he could of waited the few seconds it would have taken me to get there. Turned out he was a very nice man, when i asked him what the feck he was doing, ( he pulled over half a mile ahead to pick up ) i got a load of agression and threatened to get a taste of some wood as he pointed to his car boot, lovely man. Boston taxi services - you just cant beat them - or they'll beat you :)

A little swim

Had an informal mini aquathon tonight at the lake,  - about 400m swim and 1.75 mile run, i hate sprint distance stuff, it shows up my lack of swimming prowess for what it is. I came last out the water but finished in second, not bad you might think but there was only 4 of us :)  I could nt see a thing by the time i got to the first buoy, i forgot to use any anti fog . Hot face and freezing water are not good swimming partners.

Not much to comment on as it my taper week, just idling around trying not to overdo my calorie intake. im sure Saturdays post will be more lively, or maybe sundays, depending on if am able to move.

Saturday, 27 August 2011

go on then ...one last long one

I squeezed a cheeky last 2k swim this morning, definately my last long session before the vit. The water seems so much colder in the morning even though it was 17°C but I thought I better have one morning OW swim before hand

Friday, 26 August 2011

last long run .....done

As the title so simply says, thats all my Vitruvian prep done, what happens now is anyones guess. A taper week with a few easy runs, rides and swims ( and a night sleeping in the car ) is all that stands between me and my next hurdle.

If any of the PSOF are reading - its been a great comfort knowing that im not going to be the only one racing the cut offs and the support and advice from the pirates is always helpful and mostly amusing.

Last big ride before the Vit

today has been eventful - having a tyre blow out in a car is bad enough, having one at 29.7mph, according to my garmin, on a pushbike is another thing. having the car behind you nearly wiping you out - quite scary.

at last i have got the correct course sussed out for the Vit, and today did the 2 loops clocking up about 50 miles. first loop 1.22.50, the second  1.47.55 due to the near miss. without the puncture i reasoned that it would have been about 1.27.00 which is within my 3hours 10 minutes bike split target.

With quads that seemed twice the size a recovery swim needed - only did about 1000m as the pool had the granny brigade in full force tonight. At one point it looked like the D Day landings from the shallow end.

Open Water

With the Vitruvian Tri coming up fast I had my last chance to get in an open water swim session at Tattershall Lakes tonight.

The Vit requirements are 1.9k(1.2mile) swim, 85k(52m) bike and 21k(13m) run, otherwise known as Middle Distance or Half Iron Distance. The bike is going to be hard, the run should be bearable but before tonight i had never swam more than 500m non stop in open water so this was, and still is an unknown. Any way 1600m was done in around 36 minutes which will hopefully make a 45 minute swim split - which I'll be very pleased about if I can pull that off in 10 days time.

The story so far..............part 1....

......One year and five days ago a package arrived at my house, a box that would change me, my outlook, my future, my family and certainly my belief that anything is acheiveable given the right tools and the right knowledge.

Just over a year ago i weighed in at around 17 stone, not too bad for a 6 foot 5 inch rugby player you might think, but i wasnt. I was a 5 foot 9 inch shop keeper with a BMI figure close to my 38 years of age.

Inside the box was an electrically mechanised energy converter, it could be used to transfer fat to heat via the power a humans legs.  It was a treadmill.

A few weeks previous i had tried to run down the road, within 50 metres i was gasping for breath. This was a shock. In my younger days I could run for miles. Time had indeed taken its toll and action had to be taken and the order for my machine was immenent. I felt too ashamed to run down the road and despite the old saying that you shouldnt care what people think, for me, the act of roadrunning at that weight was never on the cards.

I wish I had more data for the records but i started out with the slow runs of less than 1km. Everynight I would hit the tready, gradually increasing distance and pace. The earliest records I have are from the 7th September 2010, I did 5k on my machine in 35.16. I remember the first time i did 10k so vividly, around the 25th Sept 2010 in a not so lightning quick 68.59.  That was THE moment. From that euphoric feeling of completing that distance, only a few weeks before would have seemed impossible, I was captivated by the fitness bug.

I knew i would need a focus so entered the Lincoln 10k, its close to me and pretty flat so that was my goal for the next few months. Even before i had ran the Lincoln event I was signed up for the London BUPA 10k. This method of pressurising seems to work for me as you can see from the races I have done upto now.

As my times came down on the treadmill my confidence grew and eventually in January 2011 I had the motivation or bravery to go out to the road. Running on the roads is a lot harder for me than the treadmill. Reassessing my times I was going for a sub 60 minute 10k at Lincoln. In the back of my mind I thought I had a chance of a sub 55 but never admitted it to anyone. Race day came and with it a sub 50 minute, not bad for a fat bloke!

Since then a steady flow of races have come and gone, getting that little bit longer, little bit harder ( I now had the confidence to tackle hills and trail 10ks ) and ever more diverse. Running 10km events was never going to be enough for me. The amount of miles I was putting into the treadmill and roads was silly, and knowing what I know now was totally the wrong thing to do. Luckily i never got serious injuries, just a few niggles. Days after my surprise results at Lincoln I bought a road bike and within 22 days had completed my first novice dualthlon. Coming in 5th was nice, especially nice considering that first place went to a local triathlete who runs as an age grouper for GBR, second, third and fourth went to local cycling club people using the event as a warm up. There was only about 20 people in the event but to come just behind people that have been doing it for years was a great ego boost. There was only one thing left to do. Swim.

On May the 11th, just under 2 weeks after the duathlon I ventured to the local swimming pool. I couldnt swim a length, I can laugh now but at the time it seemed swimming was going to put an end to my goal of doing a triathlon.
